October 13, 2023
Dear Parents and Guardians,
This morning Sultan Middle School went into a lockdown. Shortly after 8:00 am an individual arrived and was let into the building through our check-in system as no concerns were observed. What started out as a routine inquiry or discussion with office staff and this individual quickly escalated due to aggressive and concerning behavior. Our school resource officer was on the scene quickly and engaged with the individual to de-escalate the situation. As administrators observed the interaction between our resource officer and this individual they were concerned and activated our RAVE App which called 911 for backup as the situation continued to escalate and the individual started to move into the hallway. The school was placed in lockdown and multiple police units arrived very quickly on the scene. The police quickly took control of the situation and at no time were any students or staff in danger. With this said, events like this can cause stress and anxiety for our students so please take a few minutes to speak with your child if they attended Sultan Middle School today. Students and staff did an outstanding job navigating this situation. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to email, or call.
Sincerely,
Dan Chaplik, Superintendent
Sultan School District
