Sports Medicine
Sports Medicine is a career and technical preparation course and program designed for SHS students interested in pursuing career fields such as athletic training, physical therapy, medicine, exercise, kinesiology, nutrition, nursing and other medically related fields. The first year includes class work and practical hands-on application in the following areas: medical terminology, anatomy and physiology of the human body, injury prevention, treatment of sports injuries, taping and wrapping of injuries, first aid/CPR, emergency procedures, nutrition, sports psychology, human anatomy and physiology, therapeutic modalities, and therapeutic exercise. Students actively participate in the operations of the SHS Training room, and provide basic first aid and prevention services to athletes during home sporting events. Students are introduced to the Washington State Career and Technical Sports Medicine Association (WCTSMA) and may attend leadership events associated with WCTSMA, as well as skills and knowledge competition. This is a one-year class, and requires a commitment to involvement in athletic events and other clinical assignments outside the traditional classroom setting.
Sports Medicine may be taken and noted on transcript as science credit: Anatomy and Physiology.
